Reflection

(everyday poem 2)

The cold glass

Showing me.

But not.

Not who I am

But rather what they see

The clothing clinging to a body

But not mine

The mirror before me

Reflecting.

A young girl

Her life in order

Smiling.

Turning away

Smile turns to frown

Order turns to chaos

Being reflected,

But never seen.

Copy and Paste

(everyday poem 1)

Sports, hobbies,

Hair color, eye color,

Height, shoe size,

Shirt size, pants size,

Birthday.

Everything that I am, she is too.

My best friend, my carbon copy.

Nothing has ever made me doubt

That she is my soul sister,

And I am hers.

Her kind smile, her hysterical laugh

Always able to keep me in good spirits.

Never a moment of discomfort

Never any judgment.

Our slight differences

Proving to aid the other

One can write.

The other needs help.

One can ride a skateboard,

The other wants to learn.

The yin to my yang

But even still

Few things with always stay the same

The date on our birth certificates

And the way our souls align.

Can You Repeat That?

(graded poem #1)

I promise you I was listening.

I was looking at you the entire time.

I’m telling you

I am smart.

I know the answer.

I can do it.

I can hear you.

I promise.

I’m listening.

How can you be listening?

You asked me to repeat.

You ask the same question twice.

You were looking right through me.

You need to focus.

But how can I focus when the leaves move outside?

Did you see the light flicker?

What about the clock ticking?

Did you hear the door close in the hall?

I promise I’m listening.

Please.

Can you repeat that?

Journal #15

After completing the resume workshop portion of this course, I can confidently say that I have a better understanding of the workings of a resume as well as a new found comfort in knowing that I have a solid start to my future resume. Before coming into this course, I really had no idea how to even go about writing a resume (which was part of my reason for taking the course in the first place). I can now relax by knowing that I at the very least have a start to this forever changing document. After the peer workshop, I had some serious work to do in terms of format as well as the addition of some pretty important aspects that were missing. I find that this work was very insightful and taught me a lot about professional writing as well as being able to be knowledgeable enough to help edit the workings of others as well.

This cover letter was truly my first experience with professional writing. It was a very different process than that of creative writing (which is what I am used to). In the beginning I found that I was making my writing too extravagant for professional writing. The language was not concise or specific, thus making my cover letter sound wordy and complicated. I found that once I started to see examples of various cover letters, I was able to figure out how to navigate my way around my past experience in creative writing in order to sound more professional. Near the end of this process I can definitely begin to see and shift in my writing style, and I can confidently say that I have gained insight to better expand my business writing skills.

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am currently a sophomore at the University of New England where I am majoring in environmental science and minoring in writing. I am reaching out today to express interest in the manager position at your Biddeford location that is listed on wendyscareers.com.

I currently have two years of restaurant experience in which I have taken orders both by hand and electronically.  My current position is in the front of house at PJs Family Restaurant during peak tourist season at a popular vacation spot, Cape Cod, Massachusetts.  This position requires me to take orders, serve tables, work the line in the kitchen (place food items with their correct orders), keep the customers happy, restock items, work the cash register, as well as opening and closing duties.  I believe that the level of focus it takes in order to accomplish these tasks during a very busy time will allow me to succeed in this position.

Serving the general public has always been a passion of mine as well as team building.  Past employers of mine have described me as “motivated” and a “natural leader”.  It was because of this that I chose to further develop my leadership skills by coaching youth volleyball.  I find that it is important to provide young people with a sense of team unity and working towards a common goal.

I have always had a passion for learning new things and trying to improve at them for as long as I can remember.  The thought of being able to take on this leadership role and become a part of your community is truly an offer I had to reach out about.  If there are any questions regarding my application I can be reached at 555-555-5555 or at name@gmail.com.  I look forward to hearing from you in the coming weeks!

All best,

Jenna Sabia

Morgan Story Response 2

This is a story of a girl who is ultimately trapped in an abusive relationship with a trust fund baby, too good for everybody else, type guy.  They get into a really heated argument and she ends up throwing the engagement ring off her finger and taking off.  She is essentially left with nothing, but she at least has her freedom.  I really enjoyed the use of the side character.  I think it was really important to the story that the worker had such a vital role even though he didn’t say much.  I also really loved how tense the story was throughout the entire time.  I don’t have much as far as suggestions go, other than possibly to incorporate some sort of commotion as she is leaving.  I found it a little unrealistic that nobody except that one man noticed.

Kiehnau Story Response 2

This may be my favorite story to date.  This is a story about a woman who is kind of part of an anti gang, gang.  Hired by the FBI, called the Shadows.  She has a girlfriend named Penny who is the most pure human and a preschool teacher.  They were having dinner together at a bar, when they got surrounded by a gang.  Reyes told Penny that she should go home, so she did.  Reyes ended up having to kill 5 men, then ran out of bullets to kill the sixth one, after she missed her last shot.  Penny ends up coming back and killing the last one, saving Reyes, and Reyes asks her to marry her.  I absolutely love the ending.  The little bits of humor sprinkled in right at the end really brought the whole story together.  It was action packed, I read it so unbelievably fast because I needed to know what was going to happen next.  I think everything was worded really well and the voice stayed consistent throughout.  I don’t have many suggestions or recommendations, other than to possibly have a little bit more context as to who this specific rival gang is.  But I also don’t feel that that is entirely necessary.  Overall, I really loved this story, amazing job!
